definition of natural hair

Post by Koumba » Wed Jan 11, 2017 10:41 am

Hi everybody,

I have a stupid question, what is the definition of natural hair?
I understood that chemically and heat treated hair were out of this definition but what about the african braids hairstyle with hair extension?

Thanks for your answer.

Very BIG question Koumba!

For me, hair extensions would fall outside of the definition of natural hair. I understand that the objective is to derive as close a look to natural as possible but that's a texture to create that look. That's contrasting natural and artificial, as opposed to natural versus synthetic (texture again, and maybe substance too).

Your hair is still natural if you wear extensions. Since you are not chemically altering your hair it's still natural. Natural hair is hair that is in its true state, so if you are not changing the state of your hair putting weave on top of it, won't change that. If you relax, texturize, or heat damage your hair until the point that it is straightened, then your hair is not natural.

Would y'all consider colored hair natural? I personally see natural hair as natural that isn't altered with heat or a chemical process with a goal to PERMANENTLY STRAIGHTEN hair, but others feel only virgin hair from the scalp qualifies. What do y'all think?

I feel "natural" is hair that has its curl pattern unaltered. I personally do not color my hair because it requires too much maintenance like most UNnatural procedures. I have a patch of gray at the temples and love it. But when it goes gray all over and no roots to worry about I would welcome a platinum or silver color job on a shorter style. Natural color and natural hair are two distinct concepts as far as I am concerned.

Natural hair is the hair that God blessed you with. That means no chemicals to make it a different texture.
